Herbert D. Hentzen Jr. Scholarship

Award: $2,000 (one time award)

With donations from family and friends, MTEF has established a college scholarship in memory of Herbert D. Hentzen, Jr., who served on the board of directors from 2000 until his death in 2021 at the age of 93. He also was the foundation’s treasurer from 2001 to 2005.

The $2,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to an MTEF participant who embodies the values and love of tennis that Hentzen was known for during his lifetime.

Hentzen played varsity tennis at Whitefish Bay High School, winning a state boys’ singles championship his senior year and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he played No. 1 singles for most of his four years and captained the men’s team for two.

Because Hentzen held a degree in chemical engineering from UW and, for decades, was president of his family’s chemical coatings business one of the criteria will be that the recipient be planning to major in a STEM or business field. Since he so highly valued education, participants planning education majors also will be eligible.

MTEF participants who are high school juniors or seniors may apply for this scholarship. The scholarship money will be sent directly to the winner’s college or university.

You can apply for this application multiple years but can only be awarded the scholarship once.

Birdie and Ted D’Souza Scholarship

Award: $1,000 per year for two years

Birdie and Ted D’Souza believed deeply in the power of learning and investing in oneself. Ted, who passed away in 2024, pursued a traditional college education, earning an undergraduate degree in science and a post graduate certification in petroleum engineering, while Birdie championed the importance of trade schools, having attended a teacher trade school herself. Though they took different educational paths, they shared a common vision: that education—no matter the form—opens doors, creates opportunities, and strengthens communities.

Birdie and Ted (of blessed memory) placed a high priority on education, encouraging their family to work hard, dream big, and never stop learning. They took immense pride in the achievements of their children and grandchildren, leading by example and demonstrating that success comes from dedication, perseverance, and a lifelong commitment to growth. Above all, they believed that education is one of the most valuable investments in the future.

To honor their legacy, the MTEF Birdie and Ted D’Souza Scholarship supports players who are committed to furthering their education. This scholarship provides $1,000 per year for two years, sent directly to the recipient’s next step in education after high school. The ideal candidate is someone who is eager to invest in their future and understands the power of education in shaping their life and career. There are no limits to the educational path—whether through a two- or four-year college, a trade school, or another accredited program, this scholarship is designed to help students take their next step with confidence and purpose.

MTEF participants who are high school juniors or seniors may apply for this scholarship. The scholarship money will be sent directly to the winner’s college or university. You can apply for this application multiple years but can only be awarded the scholarship once.

Bill Schulte Memorial Scholarship

Award: $3,000 (one time award)

The Bill Schulte Memorial Scholarship honors the life and legacy of William “Bill” Schulte, whose love of tennis and connection to community left a lasting impact on those around him.

Bill grew up in Shorewood and was a talented and passionate tennis player from a young age. He competed in junior tennis, played high school tennis, participated in state leagues, and spent countless Wednesday afternoons on the court with friends who cherished both the game and his companionship.

Established through the generosity of Bill’s family and friends, this scholarship celebrates the qualities that defined him—sportsmanship, friendship, and a lifelong love of tennis.

The Bill Schulte Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to an MTEF participant who demonstrates dedication, perseverance, and personal growth through tennis and their involvement with the Milwaukee Tennis & Education Foundation. The scholarship is intended to help a deserving student pursue their education beyond high school and continue developing both on and off the court.
