Arthur Ashe Essay Contest

The Milwaukee Tennis & Education Foundation is a proud partner of the 2010 NJTL Arthur Ashe Essay Contest.  This citywide contest is open to all TEAM participants and is a requirement for all children and organizations participating in the After-School TEAM program and Summer TEAM Program. /Users/kelseynelson/Downloads/MTEF_Images/arthurashewimbledon.jpgMTEF students compete against children from over 550 nationwide NJTL chapters.

This year's contest, which ends on Ashe's birthday, July 10th, requires youngsters to answer the question, "Some say that winning the 1968 US Open as the first African American male was Arthur Ashe's greatest accomplishment, what do you think?"  Tutors assist youngsters by showing the Ashe video, "Citizen of the World," as well as helping them in the research and composition of their essays by learning about Ashe, understanding the question, and then answering in their own terms.  MTEF utilizes four books on Arthur Ashe as a part of our curriculum: "Arthur Ashe, Athlete and Activist Journey to Freedom", "Young Arthur Ashe - Brave Champion", "Daddy and Me" and "Arthur Ashe: Tennis Great."

The USTA also provides a Guide to Conducting an Essay Contest to help with the planning and execution of the contest.  Arthur Ashe was one of tennis' greatest ambassadors both on and off the court. To learn more about Arthur Ashe, click here to go to the NJTL webpage.

Charlee Goodman
8th Grade First Serve Participant

Charlee wants to be an architect when she grows up; first of all, she wants to attend the University of Pennsylvania. Lofty ambitions for a young lady who hasn’t even graduated from the 8th grade yet! Once you get to know Charlee a little better, you might not want to bet against her.

“Signing Charlee up for MTEF is one of the best things that has happened to her,” stated Charlee’s mom, Vanessa Goodman.  “The First Serve program has improved Charlee’s self-esteem, confidence, and social skills, not to mention how much her tennis has improved.”
