2008 Arthur Ashe Essay Contest

   

The Milwaukee Tennis & Education Foundation is a proud partner of the 2008 USTA NJTL Arthur Ashe Essay Contest. This city-wide contest is open to all NJTL TEAM participants and it is a requirement for all children and organizations participating in the After School TEAM Program. TEAM tutors assist youngsters by showing the Arthur Ashe video, "Citizen of the World", as well as helping them in the research and composition of their essays.  MTEF utilizes four books on Arthur Ashe as part of our curriculum - "Arthur Ashe, Athlete and Activist Journey to Freedom", "Young Arthur Ashe - Brave Champion", "Daddy and Me" and "Arthur Ashe: Tennis Great."

The 2008 essay question is:
How Do You Exemplify the Ideals of Arthur Ashe?

National winners:
National winners receive a trip to New York City, attend Arthur Ashe Kids' Day, attend a professional sporting event, see a Broadway show, take a boat tour around New York City and receive an award during the NJTL AAEC luncheon.

Midwest winners:
MTEF was fortunate to have two 2007 AAEC winners - Reginald and Raven Lee of the Sherman Park Community.   Both Reginald and Raven won in the 10 and under category.  The Lee's were recognized at the 2007 Tennis Ball and be presented with a plaque by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.  To read Reginald's essay click here.  If you would like to view Raven's essay click here.

MTEF Winners:
Foundation winners will be selected and awarded from the pool of TEAM applicants.  Awards and recognition will be given in the fall.
