Overview

MTEF's Summer Tennis & Reading Program, presented in partnership with the MPS Recreation Department and Milwaukee County Parks, is available for Milwaukee youth between the ages of 6 and 17 at five neighborhood locations throughout the city.  The program emphasizes basic fundamentals, league play, and the opportunity to participate in the citywide Mayor's Cup Junior Tennis Tournament on August 7th and 8th.  To print a copy of the 2008 Mayor's Cup registration form, click here.

Reading & Literacy Component

In addition to tennis, all summer sites include a highly structured fourty-five minute reading session and daily First Serve life skills development lesson during each three-hour block of instruction to help promote academic achievement.  The reading curriculum, administered by MTEF Education Director Kathy Adelmeyer, will include books on humanitarian Arthur Ashe, such as Freedom Summer; Rosa; Young Arthur Ashe, Brave Champion; Arthur Ashe, Athlete and Activist; and Daddy and Me.  Children participating in the first four sessions of the program will have the opportunity to participate in the Arthur Ashe Essay Contest.  As a First Serve Chapter, MTEF has access to their award-winning comprehensive $1 million life skills curriculum.  To learn more about First Serve, click here.

Mayor's Cup & Rookie Tour

In addition to the USTA Quickstart Metro League, MTEF has partnered with MPS Recreation Department and City of Milwaukee, Mayor Tom Barrett, to offer a summer-ending junior metro tournament, The Mayor's Cup.  This tournament will be held Thursday, August 7, and Friday, August 8 at Wick Field and Sherman Park.  To print a copy of the Mayor's Cup Junior Metro Tournament click here.

To further assist in the development of local youth, the Wisconsin Tennis Association sponsors the 2008 Junior Rookie Tour, a series of novice-level junior tournaments that serve as a stepping stone for Wisconsin USTA Sanctioned Tournaments.  These tournaments are a great way for children to be introduced to competitive tennis.  To view the 2008 Rookie Tour Schedule click here.
